The IPEI Report to the Community
Message from Terry Byrnes, President of IPEI Board
Send us feedback on the new web site: ipei@ipei.org
Another school year has ended; IPEI spends summer months evaluating the past year and planning for the next one.. Thanks to the generosity of the community, we have been able to donate $169,000 to our schools for teacher and student activities this year. Teacher Grant,Red & Gold Grant and Community Collaboration Grant recipients send us reports which will be included in the 2009-2010 annual report publication. June features Kids Discover the Trail! with over 2600 elementary students visiting the eight sites of the Discovery Trail. IPEI assists with several awards for students and teachers funded by donors that are presented in June. Our affiliate, the Fine Arts Booster Group, unveiled the Watershed Wall, an amazing example of collaboration at its best. So no one is on summer vacation yet!
Another fun event: One of our major fund raisers to support grants for teachers is the IPEI Adult Spelling Bee scheduled for Sunday, November 14. As a way to promote the 12th annual Bee, thank all who do support our Bee, and encourage new supporters, we will be hosting a reception at the Hangar Theatre on Thursday, September 2 at 5:30 pm, just before their production of the hilarious Broadway play, “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee”. Please join us at the Hangar and support good spelling and good fun!
The IPEI mission is focused on connecting students and teachers of the Ithaca City School District with the abundant array of resources available in our community. We are proud to be the vehicle through which you can lend support to our schools. We would love to hear from you with ideas, comments, or questions on how IPEI can improve and expand our connections and support for our schools.

Arts Alive Fund Receives a Challenge
The Fine Arts Booster Group’s new Arts Alive Fund has received a challenge grant from an anonymous donor. The Arts Alive Fund Challenge, designed to support extracurricular arts activities in the Ithaca City School District, will match gifts from individuals and businesses, doubling the value of these gifts up to $10,000.
The Arts Alive Fund goal is to restore all secondary extracurricular and co-curricular programs at Ithaca High School, Lehman Alternative Community School, Boynton and DeWitt Middle Schools. Donations would restore musicals, chamber orchestras, jazz bands, before and after school choirs and the pep band.
Extracurricular and co-curricular activities serve an important role in secondary schools. Research shows that students engaged in positive activities develop positive behaviors and experience academic growth.
